Dr. Shirley McKellar, a decorated veteran, small business owner, former educator, and six-year elected official, has formally announced her candidacy for mayor of Tyler during a campaign kickoff rally scheduled Thursday, July 3, 2025, at 6 p.m. on the downtown Tyler square.

McKellar, who has spent decades serving the East Texas community, says her campaign will focus on economic development, public safety, infrastructure, and equity across neighborhoods.

“I’m excited to bring forward a new vision for our city—one that uplifts every citizen,” McKellar said. “This campaign is about unity, progress, and service. Together, we rise.”

McKellar’s candidacy is built on her legacy of leadership as a retired U.S. Army officer, a healthcare professional, and a champion for education and entrepreneurship. She has served the Tyler area through her business and public service, including multiple community engagement initiatives.
